Marble, limestone, or precast — three questions settle it.
First, how much carving do you want? Solid stone charges by the hour of hand-work, and ornament gets expensive quickly. Precast casts the same profile from a mold, which makes it the best detail-per-dollar of the three.
Second, is it durable? Limestone is soft and porous and will stain, chip, and patina. Marble etches, so go honed rather than polished. Precast is sealed and repairable, and handles daily life without much thought.
Third, should it lead the room or support it? Marble leads. Limestone softens. Precast does either, with integral color and texture — no paint needed.
One practical footnote: if it`s an upper floor, weight and section size are worth confirming with your installer early. Solid marble mantels are genuinely heavy, while precast is lightweight and straightforward to install
